BY KAREN BOSSICK

The wolverine is a muscular carnivore known for its ferocity and extraordinary strength, which enables it to kill prey many times larger than itself. It’s the mascot of Wood River High and Middle School sports teams.

And, while it has been spotted near the Glassford Heights neighborhood north of Ketchum and near the Yankee Fork area, it is extremely solitary and elusive, making sightings pretty special.

Dr. Kimberly Heinemeyer, a wildlife and conservation expert, will provide an overview of the little known and little understood creature at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Ketchum’s Community Library.

The presentation is being offered by the library in partnership with the Sawtooth Interpretive & Historical Association, which offers lectures focusing on history and natural resources at the Stanley Museum.

Heinemeyer is the senior scientist and executive at Braided Knowledge Environmental Consulting in Bozeman, Mont. She has long researched mid-sized carnivores, such as wolverines, fishers and American marten.

She and colleagues recently completed a six-year research project in Central Idaho, including the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, to document responses of wolverines to backcountry winter recreation. The study is one of the most intensive to date.

The presentation is being offered only in person. Reserve your spot at https://thecommunitylibrary.libcal.com/event/12234946.
