Be prepared to meet “The Mitten” or “A Polar Bear in the Snow” next time you venture out on the Wood River Trail.

The Blaine County Recreation District, Hailey Public Library and The Community Library are posting pages from the two books along the bike path for adults and children to read from Thursday, Feb. 13 through Monday, Feb. 24, weather permitting.

It’s another chapter in the StoryWalk that occasionally springs up along the path.

“The Mitten” will be posted along the Wood River Trail between Fox Acres Road and Woodside Boulevard. The story, by Jan Brett, charts the reactions of animals that find a mitten Nicki has dropped in the snow. A curious mole crawls in it first, followed by a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last.

“A Polar Bear in the Snow,” by Mac Barnett, will be posted between 6th Street and Wood River Drive in Ketchum. It tells the story of a magnificent polar bear who strikes out through a fantastic world of snow and shockingly blue sea on a mysterious walk.

Both books will be posted in English and Spanish.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Local libraries have partnered with the BCRD to offer it for several years in winter and summer to families who want to enhance their walk, ski or bike ride down the path.

Some cities, including Meridian, have made permanent StoryWalks.
