Pamplona has the Running of the Bulls. Sun Valley has the annual Kindercup.
The Papoose Club will host the 67th annual Kindercup at Dollar Mountain on Sunday, March 2.
Children 3 to 12 are invited to race in the free family-friendly ski and snowboard race, which attracts up to 250 skiers each year.
All participants will receive commemorative pins, and the top kids will climb the podium that has boasted the likes of three-time Olympic alpine racer Picabo Street and Olympic snowboarder Graham Watanabe.
Kids can compete in age-specific race categories. Costumes are encouraged.
There is no race day registration. Sign up in advance at https://www.papooseclub.org/kindercup.
With parking limited, a shuttle will be provided from the Sun Valley Pavilion parking lot, starting at 8 a.m. Bib bag pickup is between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., and the races will start at 10 a.m.
The top three racers in each category will be recognized at the ceremony starting at approximately noon.
The Kindercup is one of two free children’s events organized by the Papoose Club each year to foster community and youth development. The original founders of Papoose Club started the Kindercup in 1957. Club members started the Nordic Cup more recently as children’s participation in Nordic skiing burgeoned.
The club supports local organizations that serve youth by allocating funds it raises through the Holiday Bazaar and the Wagon Days Pancake Breakfast.
During its February meeting the Club awarded $6,500 for:
…The Wood River High School Senior Bash to cover the costs of hosting a post-graduation party for graduating seniors
…Sawtooth Botanical Garden for its Bug Zoo to be held in May
…Carey Spanish Club to help cover the expenses of a trip abroad.
This year’s Kindercup sponsors are G&G Landscaping, Double A Dairy, Davis Embroidery, Idaho Lumber, Pioneer Title, Smiley’s Mountain Photography, Stinker Station, St. Lukes Wood River, and Zenergy Health Club and Spa.
