Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation hosted the third and final qualifier in the Intermountain Cross Country Junior National Qualifier Series this weekend at Lake Creek. More than 300 athletes representing 15 clubs from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah raced to earn their spot on the starting lines at the 2025 Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships.

The IMD Junior National Team was named at the conclusion of the event, with SVSEF ultimately earning eight confirmed and one alternate spot on the team.

Athletes compete at Junior Nationals as part of 10 divisional teams representing Alaska, Far West, Great Lakes, High Plains, Intermountain, Mid Atlantic, Midwest, New England, Pacific Northwest Ski Association and Rocky Mountain. Each Division can bring up to 25 male and 25 female athletes spread across the U16, and U18/20 age groups.

The championships will be held March 6-15 at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway, Utah.

SVSEF XC Team athletes who qualified for the 2025 Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships in the U18/20 age class are Molly Maybach, Cora Faye Scott, Mazzy Conners, Charlie St. George, Nick Gardiner, Whit Brown and alternate, Zach Quesnel. Those qualifying in the U16 age class are Tait Boschen and Duncan Fryberger.

Molly Maybach finished first in the classic sprint among the women in the U18/20 age class. Thijs Lloyd and Sydney Nelson placed second in their U14 races.

“It was awesome to see a ton of participation from our SVSEF athletes this weekend, as 80 Devo through Comp Team skiers put a bib on,” said Chris Mallory, SVSEF XC Comp Team Head Coach. “We always seem to attract a snow event when we host, and this year it gave the athletes a little extra challenge on the final day of racing at Lake Creek. There was a lot on the line for Comp athletes trying to qualify for Junior Nationals happening in two weeks, and it was great to see the team rise to the occasion.”

Saturday’s Classic Sprint races welcomed sunny skies and epic conditions at the world-class Lake Creek trails, while athletes racing in Sunday’s Freestyle Mass Start battled more challenging conditions with ongoing snow and flat light.

“Overall, it was a great weekend filled with exciting competitions, team support, community involvement, and a lot of great energy,” said Becky Flynn, SVSEF XC Cross Country Program Director. “It was nice to see our teams shine on our home courses. Lake Creek trails are challenging, and our athletes really poured their hearts and effort into every kilometer on the courses! Congratulations to all the teams that were part of it and thank you to our volunteers, our race crew, sponsors, and supporters who helped make the event so memorable for everyone who came to race.”
