STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

Silver Creek Preserve is turning 50. And it will celebrate its opening day of the summer and opening day of the fishing season on Saturday with a free BBQ, guided bird watching, wildflower walks and kid’s activities.

The desert spring creek south of Bellevue along Highway 20 offers a world-class trout fishery that bedevils the fishermen who challenge themselves there. Wildlife lovers can often spot moose, and bird lovers can spot some 150 birds ranging from bald eagles to trumpeter swans.

Flower enthusiasts can spot wild iris, blue camas and other ornamentals of nature.

The Preserve encompasses 882 acres that have been protected by The Nature Conservancy of Idaho. And some 15,000 acres of surrounding lands have been protected through conservation easements.

To get there, drive south from Ketchum, Hailey or Bellevue on Highway 75. Turn left onto Highway 20 at the flashing light at Timmerman Hill. Continue 7.1 miles to the Kilpatrick Bridge Road where there is a sign saying “Silver Creek Preserve.” Go over the bridge and follow the road.
