STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

Is your dog faster than a speeding bullet? Can he fly through the air like a locomotive?

If so, you’ll want to head to the DockDogs competition being held Friday and Saturday, July 5-6, in Ketchum.

Is your dog a couch potato? Get him off the couch and bring him to be inspired by the high-flying, long-jumping canines in his midst.

The City of Ketchum is bringing back the DockDogs competition on the afternoon of Friday and all day on Saturday.

The competition will take place on Washington Street between the Limelight Hotel and Forest Service Park. And Tylor and the Train Robbers will perform in Forest Service Park as the event winds down on Saturday.

DockDogs is an independent governing and sanctioning organization for the growing sport of canine dock jumping and other canine performance sports. The World championships held each year in October draws thousands of spectators.

Today there are 80,000 dogs jumping across the United States and many more in countries like Canada and Australia.

The competition is especially made for those dogs who will go to the ends of the earth to get their toy. A whippet, known as a poor man’s racehorse, holds the world record long jump at 31 feet.

Last year’s competition in Ketchum attracted pros from outside Idaho and local amateurs alike.

  • The event kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday with registration and practice for the Extreme Vertical. Known as the high jump for dogs, the dog jumps from the dock up in the air to grab a bumper toy suspended over the water. The starting height is 4-foot-6. It goes up in two-inch increments as the competition progresses.
  • Saturday starts off at 9 a.m. for registration and practice for Big Air, a long jump for dogs. They’ll jump after a throw toy. The place where their tail breaks the water’s surface determines the length of their jump.

There will be three waves beginning at 10 a.m. and running through 2 p.m.

  • The Speed Retrieve is a timed event with competition beginning at 2:30 p.m. A bumper toy will be suspended above the water at the far end of the pool. The dog’s time will be recorded when the dog has dogpaddled across the pool and pulled the toy from the bracket.
  • The Big Air Finals start at 4 p.m.

Sign up your dog at https://dockdogs.com. Dogs must be on a four-foot leash, and they must be at least six months old. Pre-registration entry fees are $27 per team. On-site registration fees are $30 per team.
