100 Men Who Care will consider four organizations for funding during its first meeting of 2021.

The loose knit philanthropic group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12 over ZOOM.

Organizations being considered are:

  • The Alliance of Idaho, which protects the rights of immigrants and their families through education, outreach and advocacy. The organization founded a bilingual hotline in 2017 to field legal questions, connect people with legal support and share legal resources from across the state and country.

Since the hotline went live, the organization has served more than a hundred families. It’s helped reunify parents separated from their children at the border, worked with asylum seekers, paid fees for citizenship applications and DACA renewals and connected families with resources when their primary wage earner has been detained.

This year the organization plans to contract its own lawyer to help meet the community’s legal needs.

  • Sun Valley Culinary Institute

The group launched in 2020 as a 501© nonprofit corporation and has put on dozens of cooking classes for the community with the help of COVID protocols.

After postponing its professional cooking school because of COVID, it is again accepting applications. And it is finding that a number of qualified applicants from Blaine County cannot afford the Institute’s $12,500 annual tuition.

As a result, the Institute is working to raise scholarship funds for worthy students, several of whom have gotten a taste for the excitement of working in a restaurant while working as dishwashers or servers to support their families.

  • Neighbors Helping Neighbors

This effort was started at the beginning of the pandemic by the Crisis Hotline to nurture relationships with natural leaders in places with a large Hispanic population like the Meadows Trailer Park, Sun Tree Hollow, Country Chalet, Balmoral Living, Bellevue Trailer Court and the City of Carey.

Working with PROJECT.O.O.L.S  & Partners, the organizations hopes to train at least 10 leaders, teaching them resiliency skills in order to create a more resilient community within Blaine County. Neighbors Helping Neighbors wants to provide a monthly stipend for the NHN Community Leaders, along with education enabling them to build their personal “Wellness Army.” Neighbors also wants to build a team of youth leaders, ensuring they have the skills to help their peers.

  • Hailey Ice

The outdoor ice rink outside Campion lce House in Hailey is maintained by volunteers, which means donation dollars go far. Ice time is free and skates, sticks, pucks are available for loan free of charge. It is considered an inclusive resource for local athletic development.

Representatives from all four organizations will make five-minute pitches during Tuesday’s Zoom meeting. Men can choose to donate to one or more with their gift of $100.

Men gave $60,000 to community organizations during 2020, with nearly $50,000 of that going to organizations addressing COVID-19-related needs.

Other 100 Men Who Care meetings during 2021 will be held April 13, July 13 and Oct. 12.
