Yet another of Sun Valley’s Olympic elites is about to be memorialized in a bronze statue in Champions Meadow.

The Idaho Women’s Athletic Foundation will present an unveiling of a statue of 1972 Olympic downhill Bronze Medalist Susie Corrock Luby at noon Thursday, July 30, along Olympic Row.

Corrock made the U.S. Ski Team in the early 1970s, after growing up training on Sun Valley’s Bald Mountain. She had 16 top 10 finishes in World Cup competition: eight in downhill, two in giant slalom and six in slalom.

She won the bronze medal in the downhill at the Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, two years after making her World Cup debut at age 18. She finished ninth in the slalom, which was won by teammate Barbara Cochran.

Her lifestyle bronze statue, created by Boise sculptor Benjamin Victor, is the last of a handful of statues honoring Sun Valley Olympic females in an effort initiated by Ketchum attorney Brian Barsotti. It will be joining Gretchen Fraser, who was the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in alpine skiing in 1948.

Others on Our Olympic Ladies row include gold and silver alpine ski medalist Picabo Street; halfpipe gold medalist Kaitly Farrington; Olympic alpine silver medalist Christin Cooper, and Muffy Davis, who won a slew of medals competing in winter Paralympics on a mono-ski and at the 2012 London Summer Paralympics using a handcycle.

The Idaho Women’s Athletic Foundation honors the legacy of female athletes from Idaho in hopes of inspiring and empowering Idaho’s future female athletes. It does that through the “Our Olympic Ladies” sculptures, as well as programs and scholarships.

The Ketchum-based nonprofit’s largest funder is the Spur Community Foundation.
