A majority of Community School’s tennis players were still competing on Nordic skis when those they would meet at tennis competitions this spring were already lobbing tennis balls around.
Despite that late start, the Cutthroats managed to put together an impressive showing this weekend that will enable the school to send five singles players and four doubles teams to next weekend’s State Tournament in Caldwell.
The Idaho High School State 3A Championships will be held May 20-21 at Vallivue High School.
Among those who will go are Senior Emily Siegel and Junior Kiran Merchant, who secured the final state berth by defeating schoolmates Autumn Fleutsch and Todd Yu for third place in the Mixed Doubles Championship.
Both Siegel and Merchant, who only began competing together this year on the court, are known for excelling on the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation cross-country ski team. In addition, both student athletes were honored this year for being exemplary SVSEF student-athletes, which is defined by earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or greater while training and competing.
Hear what they have to say about playing in tennis while Nordic skiing and about what it’s like to compete on a mixed doubles team in today’s Eye on Sun Valley video.
