The couple from Missoula stopped to catch their breath as they reached the top of the Horse Creek trail outside Galena Lodge. Spotting a cooler with a bikini draped over it, the woman moved closer to inspect it.
“Honey! They’re serving margaritas on the trail!” she said, somewhat incredulously.
Of course, that’s not an everyday occurrence at Galena Lodge. Chalk it up to this week’s annual Spring Loppet, an event pairing margaritas, beer and 180 chocolate- and cinnamon sugar-covered donuts prepared by the Galena Lodge staff with skiers in costume skiing the perimeter of Galena’s trails.
Michaelyn Muggli outfitted herself in an elaborate embroidered outfit she picked up at the Gold Mine and modified by cutting air vents in the arms and slits in the skirt for better gliding. And young Elias Armstrong came dressed as a dragon.
Muffy Ritz popped a donut in her mouth at the bottom of the Titus Trail in what had to be the most scenic donut stop in North America.
“Ate too many donuts!” quipped Ritz, as her ballooned in the breeze.
