Wolverines Chalk Up Another Win in Amazing Season

BY MICHAEL DAVID

Canyon Ridge won the opening coin toss and elected to receive as the Riverhawks took a rain-soaked field against the Wolverines Friday night at Phil Homer Stadium.

And Riverhawks senior Bailey Hiebert made that choice pay off as he returned the opening kick 98 yards for a touchdown to put his team in the driver’s seat.

But that kickoff return would be the last highlight of the evening for the Riverhawks as the red-hot Wolverines answered quickly and often.

Junior Jaren Bothwell returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to give Wood River great field position. Senior quarterback Cade Schott took advantage immediately, hitting Travis Swanson on the first play from scrimmage on a 40 yard pass play down to the Canyon Ridge 2-yard line. Swanson punched it in on the next play to get the Wolverines even.

On the next Riverhawk possession, Wood River sophomore Dalton Brown intercepted a Joseph Garcia pass and returned it 12 yards into the end zone to put the Wolverines on top for good.

Another two-play scoring drive by Wood River gave them a 20-7 lead, and they never looked back, scoring four more first-half touchdowns to take a commanding 48-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

A 30-yard touchdown on a bubble screen pass from Schott to senior Turner Maza in the third quarter gave the Wolverines a 55-14 lead and junior place kicker Taylor Koth finished the scoring for the night by drilling a 30-yard fourth-quarter field goal.

Senior lineman Anthony Vecchitto said one of the keys to the Wolverine victory was the tenacity of the defensive line.

“We just kept coming and putting pressure on their offense,” said Vecchitto, who spent the majority of the night in the Riverhawk backfield disrupting their game plan, recording two sacks and tipping the Canyon Ridge pass, which resulted in Brown’s interception.

“We know we are in the playoffs, but we have goals beyond just getting in,” said Coach Kevin Stilling.

Stilling added that the team can benefit from a victory like this: “I told the guys, ‘Whether you are a one or a two, you need to be ready to play hard and execute every play'.”

Wood River moved to 7-1 overall and remained undefeated in conference play 4-0. Canyon Ridge fell to 2-6 overall, 0-4 in conference play.

The Wolverines face Minico at home next week in a game that starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. Canyon Ridge travels to Burley on Friday.
