It wasn’t the way they’d hoped it would go.
A young Wood River Wolverines girls basketball team battled all night against a senior-laden team from Kimberly but ended up on the losing end of a 45-40 contest against the Bulldogs.
Wood River, which started one senior, three sophomores and one freshman, jumped out to a first quarter lead behind the scoring of senior guard Blair Radford. The Lady Bulldogs then increased their defensive pressure on the ball, shutting the Wolverines offense down in the second quarter to take a 19-15 lead at the half.
A Patrea Topp three-pointer cut the Kimberly lead to one early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs answered right back with a three-pointer of their own, pushing the lead back to four points. Kimberly would not relinquish that lead, playing tough defense and hitting their free throws down the stretch.
The Lady Wolverines (2-1) travel to Mountain Home to face the Tigers today.
