The Wood River Wolverines treated their home crowd to an early lead Friday night on their home field, scoring 20 unanswered points in the first quarter against their Great Basin Conference rival Jerome Tigers.
An Andrew Nelson touchdown pass, a defensive score by Ethan Daves, and two Taylor Koth field goals (38 and 23 yards) provided the early scoring for the Wolverines.
But Jerome would score the next 15 points to pull within five at halftime, 20-15.
While a 31-yard field goal by Koth gave the home team a 23-15 lead in the third quarter, the Tigers stayed close, scoring a touchdown to pull within two points, 23-21.
A fourth quarter score by Jerome finally put the Tigers on top, 27-23 with four minutes remaining in the game. The determined Wolverines drove down the field deep into Tiger territory, only to be stopped on downs inside the 20-yard line.
The Wolverines now have two losses in the season, while the Tigers have won both of their games.
Wood River is back in action next Friday, Sept. 8 at Phil Homer Field in Hailey against the Twin Falls Bruins. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
