The gym at Wood River High School was packed to watch the Wood River Lady Wolverines take on the Burley Bobcats Tuesday night in Hailey.
The Bobcats came in as the second place team in the Great Basin Conference and they proved too tough, defeating the determined Wood River squad by a score of 50-32.
The Lady Wolverines came out of the gates strong with tough defense and rebounding, and at the end of the first period trailed only by two points 10-8. The contest was still tight through the second quarter, as the teams went to the break with the Bobcats up 21-16.
The visiting Burley cagers got hot from the field in the third quarter, extending the lead to 37-20. However, as has been the case all season, there was no quit in Coach Amanda Crist’s Wolverines, who cut the lead to 11 with five minutes remaining.
But that was as close as Wood River would get, as the Bobcats hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Luci Cuellar and Hayley Bjorkman led a balanced Wolverine scoring attack with 8 points apiece. Emma Flolo, Patrea Topp, Payson Bennett and Audra Mary all scored 4 points each.
It was Senior Night, honoring the lone senior on the team, Emma Flolo.
Next up for Wood River (5-13, 2-8) is a road game versus Buhl on Thursday, Jan.25. Tip-off is 7:30pm.
