The Sun Valley Community School Cutthroats hosted their Wood River Valley High School rivals Saturday afternoon in boys soccer action at The Sagewillow Soccer complex.
And the defending state champion Wolverines spoiled the hosts’ party with a convincing 5-1 victory in front of a large crowd at The Dumke Family Sagewillow Campus.
Wood River controlled the action from the opening kick and kept their record perfect, moving to 7-0 on the season. The Cutthroats dropped their second game of the year against six victories.
Both teams had scoring chances early in the first half but were unable to get on the scoreboard until the Wolverines junior midfielder Rafael Muñiz found the net 10 minutes into the contest to put Wood River ahead 1-0. At the 25 minute mark it was Muñiz again, heading a rebound past the Cutthroat goaltender to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Five minutes later, senior Emerson Flores broke free from the Cutthroat defense on a breakaway and beat Meeks Sanchez DuPont to his left to make the score 3-0.
Wolverine senior Jovany Armenta scored 10 minutes into the second half, giving Wood River a four-goal cushion. The Cutthroats broke up the shutout midway through the second half on a Cash Dart penalty kick, which turned out to be the only blemish on a sparkling performance by sophomore Wolverine goalkeeper Atzel Jimenez.
Senior Mario Macias wrapped up the scoring with a successful penalty kick to provide the final score of 5-1.
Next up for the Wolverines is a road matchup against Canyon Ridge at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11. Wood River then faces Mountain Home in Hailey at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13.
The Cutthroats travel to Gooding for a game at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10. They face Kimberly on the road at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12. Next home game for Sun Valley Community School is Saturday, Sept. 15, when they welcome Buhl to Sagewillow for a 1 p.m. contest.
