The fans showed up in full force at the Fishtank this past week for the Sun Valley Community School’s final regular-season volleyball match. And the Cutthroats returned the favor by defeating the visiting Richfield Tigers in straight sets, 3-0.
After honoring the four senior--Katie Wehrly, Elena Guylay, Miriam Gilman and Blakely Spoor--before the game, the Cutthroats took the court against their conference rivals from Richfield, and the Tigers proceeded to jump on top early in the contest, taking a 6-2 lead out of the gates.
Back-to-back aces from sophomore Savannah Spoor jump-started the home team and spurred a 16-4 scoring run to make the score 18-10. A kill from sophomore Lola Street followed by a Street ace put the Cutthroats completely in control of the first set, which they soon after captured by a score of 25-16.
Savannah Spoor and Street led the way in the second set as the team from Sun Valley took a commanding 13-4 lead at the outset. The Tigers made a push to get back in the set, but the Cutthroat seniors stepped up with solid passing from Wehrly, targeted setting from Guylay and timely hitting by Blakely Spoor to take the second set by a count of 25-15.
It was more of the same in the third and final set, with kills from the Spoor sisters, sophomore Noelle LaFleur, and Street. Wehrly started the set with an ace, and finished it off with two more to give the Cutthroats the 25-8 third set victory and big momentum heading into District Playoffs.
