On a beautiful fall evening at the Sagewillow Soccer Complex in Elkhorn, the Sun Valley Community School girls’ soccer team defeated the Wendell Trojans 9-0, to remain undefeated and atop the conference standings.
According to junior forward Christine Estep, the strategy against Wendell was to “put pressure on them early” in the game. Estep and her teammates did just that as she broke free behind the defenders two minutes into the contest and beat the Wendell goalie to her right side to take an early 1-0 lead.
That would prove to be the first of many for Estep, who scored three more goals in the first half, including a fabulous header off a corner kick, to give the Cutthroats a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
Senior Captain Ali Rathfon got in on the scoring action 4:20 into the second half, and Tatum Minor scored a goal at the 10-minute mark to give the Cutthroats a commanding 6-0 lead. Estep then added to her already impressive total with a goal off a beautiful Rathfon centering pass one minute later, and scored one more breakaway goal for good measure to tally her sixth goal of the game.
The Lady Cutthroats are ranked in the top four in both the media and coaches’ polls entering the District playoffs the weekend of Oct. 12 as they aim for the State Tournament in late October.
