While the Wolverines’ Varsity Football battled through a rebuilding season, the JV squad, led by Coach Juan Martinez, put together a successful campaign, winning six of their last seven games, including an exciting 24-20 victory over Canyon Ridge this past Thursday in Hailey.
With that win, they finished the season on a high note.
The Wolverines jumped out quickly against the Riverhawks, building a 12-0 lead with scores from sophomore Luke Marlow and freshman Zack Dilworth. They added an 80-yard punt return touchdown by Max Jenson to take an 18-6 lead into the halftime intermission.
But Canyon Ridge fought back in the second half and eventually grabbed a 20-18 lead in the fourth quarter. The Riverhawks appeared to have the game in hand as they possessed the football with 1:30 minutes remaining, clinging to that two point lead. But a botched handoff resulted in a fumble recovery for the Wolverines who took full advantage of the opportunity.
With 34 seconds left on the clock, freshman quarterback Sawyer Grafft hit Christian Hernandez for a 15-yard scoring strike to seal the victory for Wood River.
Looks like the future of the WRHS football program is in good hands.
