The gymnasium was packed on Senior Night in Hailey as the Wolverines looked to finish the regular season on a high note. After acknowledging the seniors in a pre-game ceremony, Wood River hung tough with a sharp shooting Minico Spartan squad in the first half only to have the Spartans pull away in the second for a 59-34 victory.
Senior point guard Johnny Radford, who had moved to the top of the Wolverines all-time scoring leaders list two days earlier, came out hot in the first quarter, scoring seven points and grabbing two rebounds to keep Wood River within three, 17-14.
Radford added nine more points in the second quarter and his team trailed Minico 31-24 at the break.
The Spartans continued their torrid shooting in the third quarter at the same time the Wolverines cooled down and extended their lead to 47-31.
With the game out of reach, Wolverine Coach John Radford pulled his son out of the game to give others playing time. And, with Radford on the bench for most of the fourth quarter, Minico outscored Wood River 12-3 in the final stanza and walked away with the 59-34 victory.
Radford finished the night with 22 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Senior center Kade Heitzman added five points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Senior Isai Mendoza tallied two points and two rebounds and Senior Walter Kriesien had three points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Senior twin brothers Brogan and Davis Ros each scored and Davis pulled down three rebounds.
Next up for the Wolverines is a District playoff game Thursday, Feb. 20, against these same Minico Spartans in Minico. Wood River will play again on Saturday, Feb. 22, with the location to be determined by Thursday’s results.
