The Sun Valley Suns hosted the talented New York St. Nick’s Hockey Club at The Campion Ice House in Hailey this past weekend.
And, while St. Nick’s jumped out to early leads both nights, the Suns came from behind to win 6-5 on Friday night and 8-3 on Saturday.
On Friday, St. Nick’s scored the first two goals out of the gate in the first period, sending a message to the Suns and the full house that they made the trek out west from New York City with winning in mind.
The Suns battled back in the second period with four goals, but New York scored three of their own to hold the one goal lead after two stanzas, 5-4. Sun Valley shut down the visitors in the third and scored twice to take the 6-5 victory.
It’s was more of the same in game 2 on Saturday as St. Nick’s came out on fire to take a 1-0 lead minutes into the contest. The Suns tied the game at 1-1 before New York put up two scores to take a 2-goal lead, 3-1.
But Sun Valley stepped up the intensity on both ends of the ice, sensing the short-handed visitors were running out of gas. The Suns scored seven unanswered goals, including an empty netter with less than one second remaining to take the game and the series sweep.
The Suns are at home again this coming Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25 against their Black Diamond Hockey League rivals, The Vail Yeti. The puck drops at 7 p.m. both nights at the Campion Ice House in Hailey.
Pre-sale tickets are available at PK’s Ski Shop until 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available at the door as well.
