Sun Valley’s Hilary Knight scored a hat trick Sunday as Team USA beat Canada in the Women’s Hockey World Championship 2023.
Knight, the team captain, scored three goals to lift Team USA to a 6-3 victory in Brampton, Ontario.
The Toronto Sun called it "Knightmare" on its front page.
Knight scored her first goal in the second period to give USA a 2-2 tie. A tripping call and delay-of-game penalty on Canada with four minutes left gave Team USA a five-on-three power play. And Knight made the most of it, scoring her 100th point in her career and breaking a 3-3 tie to give USA its first lead.
That lead would be enough. But, less than a minute later, Knight tipped a shot for the hat trick giving USA a 5-3 lead with less than three minutes remaining.
Canada had won the rivalry’s last three gold medal games, including the 2022 Olympics and two Women’s World Championships.
