“A Farewell to Arms”—Ernest Hemingway’s World War I novel of the love affair between an American ambulance driver and his nurse--will serve as the centerpiece of Community Library’s 2018 Ernest Hemingway Seminar.

The seminar will kick off with an opening reception and presentation of that iconic book on Thursday, Sept. 6. It will continue through Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7 and 8.

One of the speakers--Suzanne del Gizzo, editor of the Hemingway Review--calls “A Farewell to Arms” Hemingway’s greatest love story.

And it became the start of readers’ love affair with Hemingway, as it secured his place as one of America’s greatest writers.

The title is ironic in that Hemingway struggled with how to end it, even though he liked endings and was good at farewells. In fact, a University of Maryland professor will make a presentation during the seminar in which he will talk about the 47 variant endings printed at the back of the Hemingway Library Edition of “A Farewell to Arms.”

Seminar attendees will be encouraged to defend one of the alternatives as providing a better farewell.

“We’ve got some great speakers, many of them from the academic world. And I’ve noticed that people who attend this often want to know what the people who get paid to analyze Hemingway think,” said Tim Price, the library’s program director. “And it will be interesting to learn what lured Hemingway to a place like Sheridan, Wyo.”

Here’s the schedule:

THURSDAY, Sept. 6

5 p.m. Opening reception and registration.

6 p.m. “Hemingway’s Great Love Story: ‘A Farewell to Arms,’” by Suzanne del Gizzo, associate professor of English at Chestnut Hill College

FRIDAY, Sept. 7

10 a.m.-noon. Boise State University panel discussion on historical and literary aspects of World War I.

2-2:30 p.m. “A Farewell to Arms” book discussion among small groups.

3:45-5:15 p.m. “Teaching ‘A Farewell to Arms’ in a War Literature Course,” by Alex Vernon, who teaches post-1900 American literature at Hendrix College, a private liberal arts college in Conway, Ark. Vernon has written a couple memoirs, including one about the Persian Gulf War, and two books of literary criticism: “Soldiers Once and Still: Ernest Hemingway, James Salter and Tim O’Brien,” and “Hemingway’s Second War: Bearing Witness to the Spanish Civil War.”

7-9:30 p.m. Screening of the 1930 film “All Quiet on the Western Front.” The film, adapted from Erich Maria Remarque’s novel by the same name, revolves around a young soldier who faces profound disillusionment in the soul-destroying horror of World War I. It will provide context for Hemingway’s own writings involving WW I. Popcorn and light refreshments will be served.

SATURDAY, Sept. 8

10-11 a.m. Regional History Department presentation and archive tour.

11 a.m.-noon. “Ernest Hemingway and Sheridan, Wyo.” Attendees will learn about Hemingway’s 1928 trip to Sheridan, Wyo., where he escaped to finish “A Farewell to Arms” in the days before he began coming to Sun Valley.

2-4 p.m. “Sensing an Ending: Hemingway’s Difficult ‘Farewell,’” by David Wyatt, professor of English at the University of Maryland.

4-5 p.m. Closing reception with light refreshments.

The seminar, which includes two receptions, costs $60 and attendees can sign up at www.thecommunitylibrary.org.
