Several youngsters are getting a muscle building workout this week, thanks to a few dozen gobblers.
Members of Our Lady of the Snows purchased 40 turkeys from Atkinsons’ Market this past week, with adults and kids teaming up to distribute them to those who take part in the twice-weekly Souper Supper in Hailey.
They distributed the bulk of the turkeys on Thursday and will give away the rest at tonight’s Souper Supper, which runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 313 1st Ave. S. Souper Supper welcomes anyone.
This is the second year Our Lady of the Snows foundation has helped provide the joy of Thanksgiving to the guests of Souper Supper, said Claire Goodyear, vice chair of the foundation. Funds with which to purchase the turkeys came from donations made to the Foundation.
The kids involved help pick up the turkeys at the store and hand them out to Souper Supper guests. Often, the youth in their exuberance hand off the turkeys before Souper Supper guests have barely entered the door.
“It’s a nice way to help people who are less fortunate and it’s in line with feeding the poor, according to the gospel,” said Sanders. “It’s also a good way to get the youth to understand that there are people less fortunate than them and their families.”
Our Lady of the Snows Foundation was set up to increase activity within the parish and provide a permanent base of income for the parish, Sanders said. It raises money and, on occasion, it distributes fund, as it did in this case.
The church has 135 fulltime families as well as “quite a few” part-time parishioners. Some have been here 45 years, he added.
Church members were among those who helped found Souper Supper 21 years ago. Souper Supper has served more than 75,000 meals with various organizations taking turns doing the cooking.
