The early morning light streamed through the trees at Ketchum’s Memory Park Friday morning as Quin Curran hung a paper fan boasting black and white geometric patterns from a tree branch.

It was the promise of things to come--the park will be transformed in the coming days with the black and white paper fans being joined by ribbons of color.

The Advocates will begin hanging colored ribbons on Monday signifying donations made by community members to benefit survivors of domestic abuse.

“I can’t wait to see it next Friday as we hang the last of the ribbons,” said Curran. “I’m truly excited and I hope the community will come together to celebrate the transition from black and white to color and light. It’s so uplifting.”

The ribbons take the place of the Black & White Soiree fundraiser that the Advocates hold every June at Trail Creek Pavilion.

Six different colors of ribbon signifying various dollar amounts from $100 to $10,000 will illustrate the community’s generosity. Donors’ names will be hung from hula hoops placed near the fountains in the park at Sixth and Main streets.

The Advocates have received $150,000 worth of donations from 130 different individuals so far—individuals will be able to make donations until Friday. Sponsors have contributed another $25,000.

A matching grant of $75,000 was offered by Barbara Boswell, Krista and Ross Copperman, Rebecca and Jonathan Neeley, Lisa Stelck and Bill Boeger and Linda and Bob Edwards.

“The Soiree has been around for so many years so we had to get more creative and say: How can we continue the soiree and get money we need?” said Curran, as she described countless meetings held over Zoom. “Reinventing ourselves has actually been a gift. It’s changed the way fundraising happens.”

Donors have been enthusiastic about the ribbon campaign said Shannon Nichols, The Advocates’ director of development.

“It’s something positive during a dark time when things keep getting cancelled,” she said. “And people also have appreciated that we’ve lowered the price point for raffle tickets from $100 to $25.”

Raffle items include a season ski pass donated by Sun Valley Resort, a package vacation to Jackson Hole with dinner for two at the Amangani Grill, a brewing party at Warfield Distillery and a vacation to Nuevo Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Money raised will help fund The Advocates’ 24-hour crisis service, shelter and transitional housing,  all of which have seen increased demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is a really positive way to move forward,” said Rebecca Neeley, a first-year board member of The Advocates.
