A massive wind farm—Idaho’s largest—could break ground near Shoshone in 2022.
The Lava Ridge Wind Project could generate up to 1,000 megawatts with a price tag in the $1 billion range, according to the Twin Falls Times-News. With hundreds of turbines, it would not just be Idaho’s largest wind farm—it would be among the biggest in the world.
The wind farm would be owned by Magic Valley Energy, an affiliate of LS Power which has projects throughout the United States. It would sit on Bureau of Land Management land in parts of Jerome, Lincoln and Minidoka counties south of Idaho Highway 24.
Most of that land is now used for grazing and recreation. Those uses would be allowed to continue.
South-central Idaho currently has 18 wind farms between Hagerman and Mountain Home and south of Burley.
