Five teams will be laying bare their slush skills today—Saturday, Feb. 6--as they vie for top honors in the inaugural Hailey Ice Carving competition.
The teams will begin cutting into six 8-foot-tall blocks weighing 27,000 pounds each as they turn them into works of art.
The competition gets underway at 9 a.m. this morning on West Croy Street between The Barkin’ and Hailey Public Library. Carvers are expected to finish up by 5 p.m.
Teams include the Hailey Kiwanis, Outdoor Hispanic Leaders and Idaho Basecamp, Hailey Volunteer Fire Department, The Chamber, Hailey Ice and Mountain Humane.
Chamber Director Mike McKenna said the City of Hailey’s Public Works department wanted to give people something to do to celebrate the season, what with the Sun Valley Film Festival, Boulder Mountain Tour and other events cancelled or going virtual this winter.
“Hopefully, it’ll become an annual event,” he said.
The carvings will be on view for seven days and nights through Sunday, Feb. 14. Spectators can vote for their favorite carving on the City of Hailey’s Facebook page.
