An introduction to ham radio will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Hailey Town Center West.

Joe Yelda, who has taught and certified more than 300 individuals in 35-plus years as an operator, will lead the workshop. He will be joined by members of the Wood River Amateur Radio Club, who will set up radios to transmit and receive and answer questions.

Registration is required at library.staff@haileypubliclibrary.org or by emailing Alison.foudy@haileypubliclibrary.org.

Amateur Radio, aka ham radio, is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together, according to the American Radio Relay League. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones.

It’s fun and social. But it can also be a lifeline during times of need, especially for backcountry skiers, hikers, hunters and campers to maintain contact with companions when there is no cell phone service.
