A board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist with expertise in skin cancer prevention and detection has joined St. Luke’s Wood River.
Dr. James “Jack” Abbott has joined Dr. Garrett Coman and Dr. Matthew Reeck at the St. Luke’s Wood River Dermatology Clinic in the Physician Office Annex, at 100 Hospital Drive next to the hospital south of Ketchum.
Dermatology services are in high demand in the Wood River Valley, and Abbott’s arrival expands access for patients seeking timely, specialized care. His advanced training helps ensure accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans for a wide range of skin conditions.
“Dermatology uniquely integrates medical, surgical and pathological disciplines,” Abbott explained. “It allows me to combine diagnostics, procedural care and prevention in a patient-centered way.”
Originally from Denver, Colo., Abbott earned his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Colorado State University and his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
He completed his dermatology residency at the University of Utah and advanced fellowship training in dermatopathology at the University of Pennsylvania. For the past four years, he has practiced throughout Montana and organized an annual dermatology conference at Big Sky.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Abbott enjoys skiing, mountain biking, trail running and cooking with his partner, Larissa. They share their home with two dogs—Bronco and Caballito—and recently added a horse to their family.
“What attracts us to the Wood River Valley is the ability to live in a place where the outdoors is part of daily life,” Abbott said. “Having mountains close by is essential for us.”
