BY ED NORTHEN

Earth spins on its axis

a small speck in the vastness

of an unfathomable universe

deep into autumn

my morning begins

walking in darkness

the stars still hanging bright

human structures do not change

with the natural world

taking no notice

or ignoring natural rhythms

the geese know

I watch them flying south

in V formation

raucously honking into the cold air

deciduous trees are celebrating

clothing themselves with splendor

before they are stripped bare

by a north wind

proclaiming

in its prophetic voice

the coming winter
