A film showcasing the power of books to feed the soul even in the darkest of times will be shown Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Ketchum’s Community Library.

The Library will present a free screening of “The Book Thief” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30. And a discussion will follow at the Library’s Book Club at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in a discussion led by Kyla Merwin, the Library’s communications manager.

The 2013 film “The Book Thief” is based on the historical fiction novel of the same title by Markus Zusak, which became an international bestseller when it was published in 2005.

Set in 1939 Nazi Germany, the film follows a foster girl living near Munich who steals what she can’t resist—books. Her accordion-playing foster father teaches her to read, and she shares her stolen books with her neighbors, including the Jewish man hidden in her basement, during bombing raids.

The film stars Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, Sophie Nelisse, Ben Schnetzer and Nico Liersch. Rated PG-13, it is 131 minutes.
