Renowned Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen will be among the choreographers for Ballet Sun Valley’s presentation of Dutch National Ballet on July 1 and 2.

The two performances—entirely different from one another—will be at 7 p.m. both nights the Sun Valley Pavilion. Tickets start at $35 and are available at https://balletsunvalley.org

The first evening, titled Program A, will feature four pieces by Hans van Manen, who is considered one of the grand masters of contemporary ballet. He has choreographed more than 150 ballets, and his works are performed by the most esteemed ballet companies around the world.

The second night, Program B, will feature six pieces, including works by the 19th century French-Russian ballet dancer and choreographer Marius Petipa, considered one of the most influential choreographers in ballet history. Other works will be choreographed by William Forsythe and Wubke Kuindersma. Forsythe is known for integrating ballet and visual arts. Kuindersma, a young creative associate at Dutch National Ballet, has been included in Dance Magazine USA’s “Top 25 to watch list for 2019.”

The performances will feature 32 Dutch National Ballet dancers from 12 countries—Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Spain and the United States.

Ballet Sun Valley Founding Music Director Martin West, the principal conductor at San Francisco Ballet, will conduct the live music, as he did last year.

“I look forward to Ballet Sun Valley every year as a highlight of my summer,” said West. “The standard of dancing is as good as you see anywhere and I’m incredibly excited that this year we are hosting our first international company. I am looking forward to working again with the amazing dancers of Dutch National Ballet, whom I enjoyed working with a few years ago in Amsterdam.”

This is the first time Dutch National Ballet has performed in the United States in 40 years. Founded 60 years ago, it is considered one of the world’s foremost ballet companies. The New York Times ranked the company in the top five dance institutions in the world.

The company is under the artistic direction of Ted Brandsen, who danced with Dutch National Ballet for 10 years before turning his focus to choreography. He won the Australian Dance Award for Choreography in 2000 while serving as artistic director of West Australian Ballet. He returned to Dutch National Ballet in 2003.
