When Sun Valley was left high and dry during its opening in 1936, the resort took its guests to Galena to ski. At one time in the 1940s the former mining town even sported a rope tow. But the lodge and its  cross-country trails were nearly lost in 1994 when the lodge was shuttered and the Forest Service threatened to tear it down.

Happily, Teresa Heinz Kerry stepped up with $325,000 to purchase the lodge and the community donated $200,000 for an endowment fund. But did you know Heinz played a key role in ensuring another jewel of the community? Learn more in today’s Eye on Sun Valley video as Jenny Busdon talks about the history of Galena Lodge and the Harriman Trail.
