Sports commentator Tim Ryan, who has been a longtime part of the Sun Valley community, will take armchair travelers and sports enthusiasts on a riveting journey as he shares anecdotes from his adventures in broadcasting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Ketchum’s Community Library.
Ryan’s memoir, “On Someone Else’s Nickel,” describes covering 30 sports in more than 20 countries over 50 years.
That includes 10 Olympic Games, more than 300 championship boxing matches, World Cup ski races, NHL hockey and Wimbledon and U.S. Open tennis.
But Ryan doesn’t just describe what it’s like to cover some of sport’s most memorable moments. He also describes things that happened on the way to covering those stories, such as how he crash landed in the Namib desert, was charged by a rhino in Zimbabwe, herded sheep at the beginning of an Olympics telecast and dodged flying bottles at a professional boxing match.
He also recounts how he came to call the first Ali-Frazier fight for the Armed Forces Network and how he hosted a tennis tournament featuring the McEnroe brothers to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Ryan has been an important part of the Sun Valley sports community, as well, taking part in the Janss Pro-Am which raises money for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation on occasion.
