Some of the leading doctors in the field will present a free talk from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Sun Valley Resort. The free talk will be held in the Continental Room of the Sun Valley Inn.
Then, the focus will shift to Saturday’s concert featuring Steve Augeri, former lead vocalist for Journey, who is known for his soaring vocals and powerful stage presence on such songs as “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Faithfully” and “Anyway you Want It.”
Proceeds from the Killebrew-Thompson Memorial’s Concert for Cancer will fund life-saving cancer treatment and research.
The show starts at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, outside the River Run Lodge at Sun Valley Resort. Tickets start at $30 for lawn seating. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. To purchase tickets, visit http://www.sunvalley.ticketfly.com or call 208-726-1049.
It’s all part of the Killebrew-Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament, which was founded in 1977 by Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew and Congressman Ralph Harding in memory of Minnesota Twins shortstop Danny Thompson who died of leukemia at 29.
One of the leading cancer research fundraisers of its kind, it has attracted countless celebrities, Congressman, professional athletes and corporate sponsors intent on helping to find a cure for cancer. It has raised more than $17.6 million to date.
Last year’s event raised $1 million. And beneficiaries were able to leverage the funds through matching grant programs to increase the impact.
Over the years the event has featured Huey Lewis and the News, Foreigner and last year’s 1964 The Tribute, which had everyone on their feet twisting to The Beatles’ hits.
The 43rd annual golf tourney starts today with registration and the opportunity for a practice round or other activities. It runs through Saturday, Aug. 17. Included on the busy schedule is a Welcome BBQ at Trail Creek Cabin, Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Knob Hill Grill, Hemingway tour, guided hikes and cocktail receptions.
Proceeds benefit treatment and research at St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute in Boise and the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota. To learn more, visit www.killebrewthompsonmemorial.com
