Tony Tekaroniake Evans will discuss his new book “Teaching Native Pride: Upward Bound and the Legacy of Isabel Bond” on Thursday.
Evans will discuss the book at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, courtesy of the Hailey Public Library. To RSVP for the Zoom discussion, email Kristin.fletcher@haileypubliclibrary.org
Upward Bound was a program at the University of Idaho that helped low-income and at-risk students among Idaho’s Native Americans attend college.
“Bond intertwined regional Native American history and her own Idaho family history to help Indian students break away from entrenched negative cycles,” said Kristin Fletcher, the library’s programs and engagement manager. “In addition, many Anglos gained a deeper appreciation for their Native neighbors’ culture and history.”
Evans is an enrolled Bear Clan member of the Kahnawake Mohawks of Quebec. He also has traveled to the Kingdom of Tonga to report on traditional Polynesian sailing practices.
