Sun Valley Music Director Alasdair Neale will talk with composer Anna Clyne about the new work she wrote for the Sun Valley Music Festival on Saturday morning.

The Upbeat with Alasdair conversation will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at The Community Library in Ketchum.

Clyne, a native of London now living in the United States, has been described as a “composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods” by the New York Times. The Grammy-nominated composer is one of today’s most in-demand composers—the most performed living woman composer in the world, according to Bachtrack.

She has partnered with such artists as Yo-Yo Ma and her work has been featured at such venues as the World Economic Forum in Davos and the Nobel Prize awards ceremony in Sweden.

She works in electroacoustic music, as well as acoustic music, integrating such technology as the Augmented Orchestra, into orchestral performance. And she created a series of original abstract paintings to accompany her “Palette.”

The composition she wrote for the Music Festival is titled “Woman of the Mountain,” and Clyne describes it as “evoking the journey of an extraordinary woman immersed in the natural world, climbing toward a mountain summit in search of love.”

The piece incorporates an early Irish song “Slievenamon,” which means “Mountain of the Women.” Clyne references a mountain in County Tipperary, which has the remains of ancient burial cairns at the summit—seen as portals to the Otherworld in Irish mythology.

It will be performed at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at the Sun Valley Pavilion. Admission is free.
