STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

A free screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary “Minding the Gap” will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12 at Hailey Town Center West on River and Bullion streets.

Filmed over 12 years by skater Bing Liu, the movie follows young skateboarders as they navigate friendship and trauma while escaping broken homes. As the boys grow into men, they confront the realities of their childhoods and the way those experiences are shaping their relationships and the choices of people they are becoming.

The film, offered by The Advocates, explores brotherhood, domestic abuse and resilience through skateboarding.  It explores what young people carry with them and the importance of having safe adults kids can turn to.

The Film Stage has called it “one of the greatest coming-of-age films ever.” It won a Special Jury Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

Oh, and it features some rad skateboarding.
