The Wood River Wolverines boy’s soccer team scored first and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Burley Bobcats at Founders Field Wednesday.
In front of a big and boisterous home crowd that turned out for Senior Day, the victorious Wolverines earned Coach Luis Monjaras his 100th career victory and the team finished the regular season on top of the Great Basin Conference.
Monjaras, who was doused by his players with five gallons of ice water after the game, deflected praise, stating, “This isn’t about me. The boys earned every one of those 100 victories.”
The Wolverines (12-2, 8-1) opened up the scoring early in the first half as Jovany Armenta knocked in a rebound for the 1-0 lead. Kevin Montes scored on a breakaway in the second half, beating the Burley goalkeeper into the upper left corner of the net.
Burley (8-6-1, 5-4-1) scored a late goal, providing the final score.
Next up for Wood River is the District tournament.
