The Wolverines came out strong against the Minico Spartans on Thursday night, but the home team was unable to withstand a third quarter barrage of 3-pointers.
They ended up falling to their Great Basin Conference foes by a score of 58-37.
Johnny Radford hit a 3-point shot to open up the game for Wood River. A Levi Newhouse bucket gave the Wolverines a 5-0 lead and got the large crowd excited early. Colton Weatherly added a 3-pointer of his own as Wood River staked a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Minico began to heat up in the second period, but the Wolverines stayed within striking distance, trailing by 9 points at the halftime.
The Spartans pulled away from Wood River in the third period, dropping six 3-point shots to go up by 19 points, 48-29 entering the 4th period. The Wolverines played aggressive defense in the final period, but were unable to find their range from distance and make up the deficit.
The loss dropped Wood River to 0-4 in the conference and 2-10 overall. Minico improved to 2-2 in conference and 9-5 overall.
Next up for the Wolverines is a road game versus Gooding on Saturday, and then back home to face Buhl on Monday, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
