The Hailey Public Library is getting ready to pop the corn for another in its series of its free Classic Flicks screenings.
The film will be shown at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Hailey Town Center West, 116 S. River St.
The library is not allowed to reveal the name of the movie it will be showing under its contractual agreement. But think of it as “Yelling in the Snow.” The 1952 romantic musical comedy stars the light-footed Gene Kelly who gets soaked while showing off his famous dance steps with Debbie Reynolds.
The movie offers a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood in the late 1920s with Kelly, Reynolds and Donald O’Connor playing performers caught up in Hollywood’s transition from silent films to the talkies.
It is considered by many to be the greatest musical film ever made and one of the greatest movies of all time, according to Kristin Fletcher, the library’s programs manager.
“April brings spring showers and we thought this would be the perfect film to show right now,” she added. “But, not only that, it’s a great film with incredible songs. In fact, the Library of Congress selected it as one of the first 25 films for preservation because of it’s cultural, historical or aesthetic significance.”
In May the library will show a flick featuring Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and James Stewart in a 1940 romantic comedy nominated for six Academy Awards. The series will conclude in June with an iconic 1933 Marx Brothers film.
