STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN BOSSICK
Dozens of Wood River Valley residents just experienced classical piano in a wild landscape, thanks to the Sun Valley Museum and classical pianist Hunter Noack’s “In a Landscape” concert.
This week they can experience painting in the outdoors, thanks to Kneeland Gallery.
The Ketchum gallery is hosting its 32nd annual Plein Air Exhibition through Friday, Aug. 4.
Painters represented by the gallery will paint at locations near Sun Valley Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 2 and 3. They’ll then show the paintings they created this week during Gallery Walk from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the gallery.
In addition, Robert Moore will offer a painting demonstration at 1 p.m. Friday in the Gallery Courtyard at 271 First Ave. N.
En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air.” It refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. It can be more challenging than working from a photograph in a studio, as artists must contend with changing light, wind and even an occasional mosquito bite.
Artists taking part in this year’s exhibition are Steven Lee Adams, Ovanes Berberian, Jack Braman, John Hores, Shanna Kunz, Lori McNee, Caleb Meyer, Silas Thompson and Robert Moore. And they love to interact with spectators.
They will paint at the Red Barn on Sun Valley Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2. On Thursday, Aug. 3, they will paint at a location of their choice. Call the gallery at 208-726-5512 Thursday morning for the location of that day’s paint-in.
