John Beiter will talk about the Basque Culture & History at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at the Blaine County Historical Museum in Hailey.
The talk, sponsored by the Idaho Humanities Council, is free. Basques have been a prominent part of Idaho history, coming here to herd sheep. Hailey once featured several Basque boarding houses, and even today you can find Basque restaurants in Boise and Meridian.
Bieter has taught at Boise State University since 2004. He has an M.A. in History from Boise State University where his thesis was “Basque-Americans, American-Basques: Three Generations in Boise, Idaho.”
Of Basque heritage, he spent three years living, working and studying in the Basque region of Northern Spain and is proficient in Basque and Spanish.
