Have you ever fancied yourself a playwright? Or, are you an aspiring actor who’s never set foot on the stage?
The Liberty Theatre Company is offering you the chance to write, direct and perform your own 5- to 10-minute play over the course of 24 hours.
The plays will be presented at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, at The Mint in Hailey in what is the culmination of the 24-Hour Theatre Festival.
"The 24-hour format of theatre-making is such a blast”, says Naomi McDougall Jones, the company’s artistic director. “It's a space in which those who have never made theater in their lives can come together with those theatre professionals you see on our local stages all the time to create a piece of theater. The playing field sort of gets leveled because it's this delightful, mad, 24-hour whirlwind to create a play where there wasn't one before."
Novice and professional writers, stagehands and actors are invited to take part. Participants can sign up with a team of folks they already know. Or, they can sign up solo and be assigned to a team when they arrive at the theater on Saturday, Nov. 4.
““It wouldn’t be surprising if someone you know personally might be a large part of this production,” said The Liberty Theatre Company staff member Chris Carwithen. “Perhaps your neighbor, your dentist, or even your own spouse might be blowing the doors off of the theater at The Mint, right alongside the stars of Chicago and Desdemona.”
Participants will gather at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 in assigned or self-organized teams. They will be given a set of parameters for the play they are about to create. Teams will then divide the tasks involved in making a play and write, direct, rehearse and prepare to perform it over the next 24 hours.
Can’t be there the entire 24-hour period? No problem. Perhaps you can write the play from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday night. Or, show up to rehearse at 11 a.m. the next morning.
“Within your team, you construct a 24-hour experience that works for you all!" said McDougall Jones.
