The acclaimed documentary “Food and Country” will hit the screen at The Argyros at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30. The showing is part of the Sun Valley Film Festival’s new monthly movie series.

New York Times Food critic and Gourmet Magazine editor writer Ruth Reichl reaches across political and social divides to examine the country’s broken food system and the innovators risking everything to transform it.

She talks to ranchers in Kansas and Georgia; farmers in Nebraska, Ohio and the Bronx; a New England fisherman and maverick chefs on both coasts. And she shares snippets of her own personal journey when it comes to food.

“How we grow and make our food shows us our values—as a national and as human beings,” she says.

Directed and produced by Laura Gabbert, who directed “City of Gold” about Pulitzer Prize-winning food writer Jonathan Gold, The film premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Joining in the discussion will be representatives of Hailey’s Sage School, who focus each year on the country’s food system.

Tickets for the 100-minute film are  are $20, available at https://svff.eventive.org/schedule/65427a6bb10b3100266f592b/tickets.

  • In December the Sun Valley Film Festival will host “Arctic Ascent,” about professional rock climber Alex Honnold climbing the toughest walls of Greenland at 5:30 at the Argyros. There will be a Zoom Q&A with Honnold after the film.
  • The film festival will screen the classic movie “The Color Purple” starring Whoopi Goldberg at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28 at The Argyros.
  • In the New Year, the Sun Valley Film Festival will host a Sun Valley Film Festival Special Screening of “Napoleon” with an exclusive Q&A with Producer Kevin Walsh.

The film, which debuted in the theaters on Wednesday, will be shown at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14 at The Argyros. Tickets are free but reservations are required.

If all tickets are given out, unclaimed seats will be made available 15 minutes before start time on a first-come first-serve basis. There were plenty of unclaimed seats to accommodate those wishing to see the festival’s free screening of “Killers of the Flower Moon” earlier this month.
