There was no golden trophy awaiting the first to cross the finish line. But there were baggies filled with pastries for members of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Alpine U12 Travel Team.
The team held the first of four Pastry Cups on Sunday, Jan. 14, on Bald Mountain to hone their skills in preparation for an away race at Grand Targhee Jan. 20-21.
And the 39 athletes showed finesse in the gates on what was a chilly but sunny day with the morning starting off in single digits.
“What a perfect sunny day for a ski race!” said Adele Savaria, coach for the SVSEF Alpine U12 Travel Team. “The athletes showed that hard work and perseverance pays off. They did a great job out there today and are ready for the Intermountain Division North Series GS races in Targhee next week.”
A second Pastry up is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 28, as a Kombi. Kombi races provide a mix of giant Slalom; Panel Slalom, which compresses turns into a shorter hill space; Regular Slalom and stubbies, which involve skiing around short soft rubber poles, all in one course to teach young races to adapt to changing environments within one course.
Rotarun will host Pastry Cup No. 3 on Sunday, Feb. 18—an event focused on slalom. Pastry Cup No. 4 will entail a skills competition on Sunday, March 3, at a venue to be determined.
