What’s a pair of surfers from South Africa doing on a Snow Tour?

Simple. They like to have fun.

David Poole and Dominic Peters of GoldFish will be taking turns on Bald Mountain before taking the stage at the Argyros at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, as part of their GoldFish Snow Tour. And they will be joined by DJ LukeRoss and Chase Valley, who will open for them.

“We just came from a sold out concert at Aspen. We got to get a full day of snowboarding in, had a lot of fun, then we rocked the house,” said Poole. “We came up with the Snow Tour last year because we’re outdoor enthusiasts who love surfing and snowboarding. We play all over the world and we decided why not incorporate the activities we love on our tours when we can.”

GoldFish is an electronic/house/pop/DJ duo that has a unique talent for weaving DJ electronics with live sax, flute, keyboard and stand-up bass in genre-breaking music that includes fun choruses, stirring African rhythms and jazz influences.

They will follow their stop in Sun Valley with gigs at Big Bear in California, Jackson Hole, Wyo., and ski resorts in Colorado and Utah before heading to France.

Peters and Poole started their musical careers playing cello in elementary school because their school orchestras needed cello players. But Peters was never enamored with the instrument, and Poole discarded it after he was introduced to a broken saxophone at 12.

The two met at the University of Cape Town where both chose to study jazz over classical music, the other option. They started jamming and soon began augmenting their jazz notes with computerized electronic music, keyboards and driving rhythms.

They named themselves GoldFish because it was something Dom, who Dave often teases as having a three-second memory, could remember easily while they were playing in a couple bands at the same time.

“The music scene in South Africa is very different,” said Poole. “It’s got a European influence, thanks to all the different cultures that came into the country over the years with people from India, Malaysia, Portugal, England—it’s a real melting pot of influences. And the traditional music from the African tribes influences the way we create on so many levels, including rhythmically.”

The two took all those influences and poured them into their electronic music. They landed on the world stage when they were invited to perform at an advertising awards show in France. A record executive who heard them invited them to record their debut album “Caught in the Loop” in 2006.

They began opening for such artists as Fatboy Slim as they recorded a string of chart-topping hits that won them gigs from Coachella to Glastonbury

They received nine nominations for Best Duo or Group and Album of the Year at the 2009 South African Music Awards. And their 2011 album “Get Busy Living” won Album of the Year at the South African Music Awards.

Nike has used their song, “Washing Over Me,” and Kia Soul automobile claimed “Fort Knox.” And GoldFish became a main character in their whimsical animated music videos.

Their most recent album—their sixth-- is “Summer of Sound.” And Poole says he evokes favorite summertime memories for fans.

“When you smell something, it takes you back to a certain time. Music is like that, as well,” he said.

GoldFish moved to San Diego after seven years of being based in Cape Town and Ibiza.

“We were touring in the United States a lot. And a 30-hour flight between South Africa and the United States is really pretty brutal,” Poole said. “We can access the whole world from here a lot easier than we could from South Africa.”

It doesn’t hurt that the live music and the culture surrounding live music is amazing in the United States, Poole added: “We have amazing support and infrastructure. We get a feeling of what we can do, how far we can get our music to go. It seemed like a good move for us on all those levels.”

Poole cautions fans not to leave it all behind on the ski slope Saturday.

“Expect to dance as we’ll do a high energy fun show for two hours. If we can pump it out coming from seal level, those who live in Sun Valley should be able to continue the stoke!”

GoldFish played Whiskey Jacques last year, Poole noted: “We had so much fun we had to come back. This year we’re playing at The Argyros which is a bigger venue, an amazing venue. And we like coming back to a place and developing a fan base.”

IF YOU GO…

Standing only tickets cost $20 purchased in advance at https://theargyros.org. They’re $30 the day of the show. VIP Tickets cost $100 and include a Meet & Greet with GoldFish before the show in the Bailey Studio and balcony seating.

GoldFish and The Argyros have collaborated with the Limelight Ketchm hotel to offer special rates for GoldFish fans.
