STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

Win gift certificates to the Gold Mine Thrift store and Olympic pins by solving an Olympic mystery. And enjoy free tacos, pizza and ice cream at The Community Library’s Book around the Block open house on Thursday, Aug. 15.

The event, which celebrates the end of summer and the beginning of school, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15. It will have activities for all ages:

Explore the Summer Games/Local Heroes exhibit in The Library foyer featuring a look at Sun Valley’s Summer Olympians and their memorabilia, including Muffy Davis’ gold medals and the road bike ridden by Greg Randolph at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Then, answer a list of trivia questions to win prizes, including gift certificates to the Gold Mine Thrift store. The first 50 participants will be given an authentic collector’s pins from the Olympic Games.

Enjoy free cookies, tacos, pizza, and ice cream from Sun Valley Company, Taqueria al Pastor, Smoky Mountain Pizza and the new Mountain High Creamery open across from The Community Library on 4th Street.

Pick up a free book or books for your own personal library during The Library’s book giveaway from its overflow collection.

Try the book-themed Lawn Olympics, create your own medal in the Medal Craft and make a bookmark.

Get free bites from Rocky Mountain Pizza at The Gold Mine, as well as a 10 percent Back-to-School discount on Thrift merchandise with student ID.

Travel through time as you scour The Library, Wood Rivere Museum and Gold Mine Stores for fun facts and special items. Everyone gets a prize and some may win a $100 Gold Mine gift card, a mystery grand prize or other great gifts.

Listen to local authors at the Local Author Showcase. Among them: Dr. Marshall Flam, author of “Wordle Limericks;” Nick Harman, author of “The Randimals” and “We’re all Randimals,” and Shannon Jackson, author of the memoir “Better and Happier Together,” which recounts the many outdoor adventures, including hiking the Continental Divide, that she and her husband Don have taken. Also, Richard Rachlin, author of the legal thriller “Conspiracy of Lies;” Vanessa Root, author of the poetry book “Tonight I’m With the Moon,” and Angela Super, a science fiction author who has written “Erebus Dawning,” “A Star Reborn” and “Queen of the Black.”

Catch the magic act of Luis Lecanda.

Listen to music on the Cimino Plaza provided by D.J. Blind Willie.

Have your photo taken with miners from the early 1900s North Star Mine in the Time Warp Photo Booth at the Wood River Museum.

Take a selfie on the vintage ski lift chair at the Wood River Museum and explore the Cabinet of Wonders there.

“Book around the Block! is a terrific way to explore all that we offer with fun, free food, and entertainment at the Library, Museum, and Gold Mine stores,” said Carter Hedberg, The Library’s director of philanthropy. “Book around the Block! is a highlight for us, celebrating our community through a grand gathering, with entertaining activities for everyone to enjoy.”
