Winston Churchill’s sentiments on Ireland and its tortuous relationship with England took many a turn.
Initially, Churchill joined others in implementing harsh repression against Ireland, coming out against home rule for the Emerald Isle. But later he became an early advocate of partition and Irish home rule, as he wanted to create an Irish parliament with limited powers.
Lee Pollock, who annually gifts the Wood River Valley with a presentation on Churchill, will discuss the misunderstood relationship between Britain’s greatest statesman and the Emerald Isle at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, at The Community Library in Ketchum.
Pollock is the director and senior advisor to the Board of the International Churchill Society, which is dedicated to preserving the thoughts, words and deeds of Sir Winston Churchill and ensuring that his legacy remains relevant for future generations.
