The festival is a one-night-only event in which novices join with professionals in small groups to create 5- to 10-minute plays before practicing them and performing them—all in a mere 24 hours. Last season’s festival attracted both teens and adults. McDougall Jones and Joel Vilinsky wrote a script about three competing wizards who dig into a magic box. Matt Musgrove and Chris Carwithen wrote a skit about youngsters breaking into a toy store after dark to find a robot toy that everyone was flipping out about. "The first year, I thought it would be like pulling teeth to try to get people to sign up to participate in this. But 50 people signed up within the first two weeks and we had to cap it,” said Naomi McDougall Jones, the artistic director for The Liberty Theatre Company. “This year, 50 people signed up to participate within the first four days after we opened registration! “It is utterly thrilling how much enthusiasm there is for this mad, messy, wild, fun form of theatre-making. We sold out our first year’s performance at The Mint and I’m looking forward to selling out this year’s show at The Liberty Theater.”
In addition to the fun on stage, The Liberty Theatre Company will use the occasion to make its 2025/26 season announcement. “In years past, we at TLTC would hold a separate event to announce our slate of plays and musicals for the upcoming season,” said Chris Carwithen, TLTC director of Marketing and Community Engagement. “This year we’ve made the choice to combine the two events to capitalize on the excitement of the day, and to celebrate those who give so much to TLTC, both onstage and off. “Having our supporters, our community, intrinsically involved in the presenting of our upcoming productions is both poignant and poetic in a way that just feels right.” Questions?
