STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN BOSSICK Picabo Street has a run on Bald Mountain and a street at the base of Bald Mountain’s Warm Springs side named after her. Today, a statue epitomizing the ski stance she is best known for will be unveiled in Sun Valley’s Festival Meadow as the meadow is renamed Champions Meadow in honor of the growing number of Sun Valley Olympian statues there. Street will get to see the sculpture for the first time when the dedication takes place at 11 a.m. today—Monday, March 24.

There’ll be time for a few speeches—Street is providing commentary on the World Cup Finals for NBC as she practices for the 2026 Winter Olympics so she’ll undoubtedly have a few words to say. Then Wild West Skijoring and live music will follow. Lindsey Vonn, who won a silver medal in the 2025 World Cup Finals Super-G on Sunday, said that the honor is overdue and that she would like to attend, if she can. She met Street when she was 9 and Street, already a legend by then, was signing autographs at a ski shop. That encounter, Vonn said, inspired her to become the best ski racer she can be. “She should have gotten that long ago—there’s not many ski racers with their own statues,” Vonn said. “She is an amazing character, more than an athlete. She’s done a lot for the sport, inspiring a generation of skiers. I love seeing Americans excited about skiing--that gives me hope for the future.” The City of Sun Valley organized the Wild West Skijoring Invitational, thinking that Europeans in town for the World Cup Finals would enjoy a taste of the west.

Cowboys on horseback will pull skiers along a course snow groomers have mapped out in the meadow. Skiers will earn point for spearing rings hanging from poles as they zig zag around and over hay bales and jumps. Speed counts, too. Josh Glick, who helps organize the Wood River Extreme Skijoring competition held every February, says this free event will feature professional skijoring racers in three categories. But there will be a twist in the form of a L-shaped turn. The skijoring will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Live music by Prairie Blue will follow from 3:30 to 5 p.m. There also will be live music throughout the day. MONDAY, March 24
